The Mission

The Department of Economics and Sustainable Development has operated since 1993 (previously known as the Department of Home Economics and Ecology) and its mission is to cultivate and promote the science of sustainability, taking into account that the family, which is the main consumer of natural resources, interacts with its economic, social and cultural environment to ensure not only the satisfaction of its needs, but also the ability of future generations to ensure their own needs. In particular, the Department’s mission is to provide training and promote interdisciplinary research aiming to promote sustainable development and applied aspects of economics towards sustainability.

The Department’s main objectives

  • Promoting scientific knowledge and research in areas relevant to Economics and Sustainable Development, the organisation and functions of the family, and the management of the natural and cultural environment.
  • To educate students in areas of the overall economic activity, so that they can make use of social, natural and cultural resources in order to contribute to economic development in terms of quality of life. The concept of quality of life covers the whole range of living conditions and areas of activity of family members regarding economic management, consumer behaviour, nutrition, interpersonal and social relations, management of the natural environment, cultural heritage, etc., which contribute to ensuring their physical and mental health.
  • To provide psycho-pedagogical training for the acquisition of Pedagogical and Teaching Competence, which will enable the graduates of the Department to teach, in public or private schools of secondary education, courses related to the subjects of the Department.
