Feasibility Report of the Anthropoecology Laboratory
Subject of the Laboratory
Anthroecology is defined as “the study of the physical, cultural, economic, social and aesthetic environment of human beings from birth to death”. The basic mission of Anthroecology is defined as the improvement of the quality of life. Therefore, the aim of the Laboratory of Anthroecology is to develop research and educational activities with the science of Anthroecology as its thematic focus. The Laboratory serves the following research areas:
- Home Economics
- Sustainability and Quality of Life of the Family
- Natural Environment and Ecology
- Anthropogenic and Built Environment
- Sustainable Human Nutrition
- Food Security, Value Cycle and Food Waste
- Social and Solidarity Economy
- Participatory Development
- Home Technology
More specifically, the mission of the Human Ecology Laboratory is to:
- The fulfilment at undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and postdoctoral level of educational, teaching and research needs of the Department of Economics and Sustainable Development and the School of Environment, Geography and Applied Economics on issues that fall within the scope of the Laboratory’s activities as specified above.
- The collaboration with Research Centres, Academic Institutions, and recognized scientists in Greece or abroad, with academic interests and objectives that coincide, are compatible or consistent with the Laboratory’s activities.
- The organization of scientific Lectures, Workshops, Seminars, Conferences and other scientific activities, the participation in scientific events, the publication of papers and editions and the invitation of Greek and foreign recognized scientists.
- The implementation of research projects in all relevant fields of its scientific area, independently or in collaboration with other laboratories, faculty members, departments of the University, or other educational, scientific, or research institutions, as well as public or private institutions and organizations in Greece and abroad.
The connection of the laboratory with institutions of the local society in order to raise awareness on issues of Anthroecology as well as to promote its broader scientific objectives and interaction and responsiveness with the society.
Necessity – Feasibility of the Laboratory
The current era is extremely critical and the research on issues related to the science of Anthroecology is considered extremely important and necessary. Since the end of the Second World War, humans have managed in just 60 years to pollute and exploit 2/3 of the planet’s ecological systems on which life depends. In the last 60 years, the Earth’s population has doubled, food and water consumption has tripled and fossil fuel use has quadrupled. No other species has changed the Earth’s natural landscape the way humans have. Humanity’s impact on the planet has been so intense and debilitating on the biosphere that experts have named the geological era we are living through as the Anthropocene era.
Anthroecology, then, is a complex academic subject that studies the relationships between humans and the natural, social and anthropogenic environment. It also explores how people and human societies interact with nature and their environment.
Research in anthroecology will contribute to the identification and study of the above problems and the impact of humans on their social, natural and anthropogenic environment, examine the roots of these problems and propose sustainable future solutions.
Moreover, the Laboratory of Anthropology is the link between the Department of Economics and Sustainable Development and the pre-existing, founding Department of Home Economics and Ecology of Harokopio University. It is significant that, according to the literature, the first to use the term “Anthroecology” in 1909 was Ellen Swallow Richards, the first president of the American Home Economics Association. Nowadays, there is a very strong connection between Home Economics and Anthroecology, as the latter is seen as an evolution of the former by a large number of academics. A key point in time for the relationship between Human Ecology and Home Economics is 1969, when the College of Home Economics at Cornell University was renamed the College of Human Ecology. In 1970, a similar renaming took place at Michigan State University, also in the USA.
At Harokopio University there are no corresponding laboratories dealing with these subjects. Similarly, in other Greek universities, laboratories dealing with interdisciplinary research in Human Ecology are few in number.
International Trend
Internationally there are already established educational and research projects in the field of Anthroecology. Universities and research centres worldwide are studying Anthropology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Today, the science of Anthroecology finds its main expression in the universities of the United States, especially Cornell, Wisconsin, Rutgers and Michigan State Universities. In Europe, the science of Anthroecology is taught at Lund University, which is the oldest university in Sweden. Highly prestigious scientific journals that publish articles on Anthroecology are Human Ecology: an Interdisciplinary Journal published by Springer and Human Ecology Review which is the official journal of the Society for Human Ecology.
Sustainability and Development Perspectives
The Laboratory will follow a specific plan of action over a three-year time horizon, which will include the following:
- Organization and participation in scientific conferences, workshops and corresponding events (in Greece and abroad) on topics that fall within the research interests of the Laboratory.
- Preparation of research collaborations in innovative topics, with the aim of submitting them to organisations for funding.
- Participation of the members of the laboratory in foreign language study programmes, either independently or in collaboration with other departments of Harokopio University.
- Participation of the members of the laboratory in programmes of the Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning Center of Harokopio University, either independently or in collaboration with other colleagues of Harokopio University.
For the implementation of the above actions, the Laboratory will partly use the existing infrastructure of the Department, while it can also acquire new technological equipment contributing to its research and educational work. The students and researchers of the Laboratory will have access to advanced equipment and specialised software in order to assist and complete their work.
The Laboratory will be located in the premises of Harokopio University, in accordance with the legal procedures. The cost of operating the Laboratory will relate to the support of relevant courses, laboratory activities, bachelor and master theses, doctoral dissertations, support of the Department’s service and research activities. In particular, with regard to research activities, the Laboratory will seek to engage in national and European research programmes, from which it is expected to cover part of its costs. It will also carry out sustainability assessments, certification of sustainable business practices, environmental impact studies and seek to undertake all kinds of studies relevant to the Laboratory’s areas of activity.
Potential Collaborations with other Laboratories
The Laboratory of Anthroecology is the oldest laboratory of Harokopio University and can develop collaborations with all other laboratories of the Department and the University in the context of exploring the relationship between human societies and the natural environment in the context of the pillars of sustainable development.
2. LABORATORY OF APPLIED ECONOMICS AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
The Laboratory of Applied Economics and Sustainable Development serves the educational and research needs related to applied economics and sustainable development at the local, national, European, and international levels. The aim of the laboratory is the in-depth study of all parameters for the rational management of economic, social, and natural resources at local, national, and international levels, thereby promoting the study and understanding of the principles of Sustainable Development.
Director: George Malindretos, Professor
Feasibility Report of the Applied Economics and Sustainable Development Laboratory
Subject of the Laboratory
The Laboratory of Applied Economics and Sustainable Development specialises in academic and applied interdisciplinary research related to applied economics and sustainable development at local, national, European and international level.
The aim of the laboratory is to study the overall parameters for the efficient management of economic, social and environmental resources at the local, national and international level in order to promote the study and understanding of the principles of Sustainable Development.
In particular, it seeks to:
- the study of the basic factors that determine the development of a destination, such as long-term stability, improving the competitiveness of the economy, increasing productivity, boosting employment, reducing unemployment, empowering creative forces, utilising productive resources, rational use of land and natural resources, exploiting cultural resources, empowering vulnerable social groups, providing and ensuring the basic rights of education, health and quality of life.
- the analysis of the primary, secondary and tertiary production sectors. At the same time, in the context of the modern agricultural economy and the sustainable agri-food supply chain, the collaborative actions between the above sectors are analysed in order to promote the uniqueness and in general the high quality of local products, such as PDO and PGI, as well as the efficient – with sustainable practices – flow of agricultural products “from the field to the shelf”.
- the study of the exploration of consumer needs and behaviour and consequently, in the context of the strong customer-oriented approach of businesses, the ways in which businesses plan and carry out important daily operations, such as Customer Service, Marketing, Order Management, Procurement/Purchasing, etc. The starting point in the design of these processes is the consumer, who is increasingly becoming conscious of socio-environmental issues. Consequently, the business value chain must provide quality products and services in the context of adopting practices and policies aligned with the requirements of sustainable development.
- training in various sectors where business activity is developing, such as education, health, environment, tourism and culture. If students are able to understand the ways in which businesses manage their finances, plan and support their day-to-day operations, such as customer service and logistics in the context of sustainable development, then they can contribute to the value chain of businesses and organisations, while at the same time contributing to the development of various formats, such as green entrepreneurship.
At Harokopio University there are no corresponding laboratories that deal with these objects. Similarly in other Greek universities there are no laboratories that combine applied economics with development.
Necessity – Feasibility of the Laboratory
Feasibility:
The main role of the Laboratory’s mission is to conduct research, design development policies, prepare economic and technical reports, provide advisory support to institutions and organisations, support the educational process and research activity. In particular:
- Participation in national, European and other educational and research funded projects for the purposes of the laboratory.
- Cooperation with homologous research laboratories, research centres and academic institutions in Greece and abroad, as long as the scientific objectives coincide, match and complement those of the laboratory
- Organisation of scientific lectures, workshops, seminars, symposia, conferences and other scientific events, publications and editions and invitation of Greek and foreign distinguished scientists.
- Establishment and management of the necessary equipment and facilities for the above purposes.
- Providing services to individuals and organisations of all legal forms.
The research tools used by the Laboratory include socio-economic and econometric analysis, environmental (energy and pollution), socio-economic and technical evaluation, policy and institutional analysis, integrated development of decision-making tools, etc.
Necessity:
It is now clear to the academic community that the linear model of the economy that has prevailed until recently is no longer sustainable. The circular economy comes as a response to the aspiration for sustainable growth. The circular economy model, however, being a relatively new approach, requires in-depth research and study into new ways of conceiving and designing, processes, policies, production and consumption models of all the actors in economic life, thus making it necessary to have a research laboratory
International Trend
In September 2015, governments around the world signed a historic agreement. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development pledges to promote growth in a balanced way – economically, socially and environmentally – worldwide. The Agenda builds on previous commitments and contains 17 goals such as promoting sustainable and inclusive economic growth, ensuring sustainable consumption patterns, ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern forms of energy for all, developing socially and culturally sustainable cities, combating climate change and its impacts, etc.
Research activities are being developed internationally on the relation between applied economics and sustainable development, and many universities in various countries have set up laboratories to research and study these issues.
Sustainability and Development Perspectives
The Laboratory will take specific actions following the planning of growth and sustainability perspectives. Indicatively:
- Creation of a website.
- Preparation of research proposals.
- Participation in innovation competitions related to the fields of economics and sustainable development
- Creation of scientific manuals (printed and electronic versions of books, brochures, journals) related to the subjects of economics and sustainable development.
- Development of a network of partnerships with local, national and international bodies
- Inviting distinguished researchers in the field to collaborate
For the implementation of the above, the Laboratory will use part of the existing infrastructure of the Department, but at the same time it will be able to acquire new technological equipment that will assist its research and educational work. The students and researchers of the Laboratory will have access to advanced equipment and specialised software in order to assist and complete their work.
The Laboratory will be located in the premises of Harokopio University, in compliance to the legal procedures, while the costs of the Laboratory’s operation will be for the support of related courses, laboratory activities, undergraduate theses, doctoral dissertations, departmental service and research activities. In particular, in terms of research activities, the Laboratory will participate in research projects, and will seek involvement in new National and European Programmes, from which it is expected to cover part of its costs in order to be fully self-sustaining. It will also provide assessments and certification of sustainable practices in businesses and destinations, and will seek to undertake all kinds of studies related to the laboratory’s objects.
In particular, the income of the laboratory will come from:
- The execution of Research Programmes conducted for the laboratory’s own account or for the account of third parties.
- The supply of research and scientific services and products in general.
- The delivery of services, in accordance with the provisions of P.D. 159/1984, (A΄53).
- The funding that the HarokopeioUniversity may allocate from its own resources, in accordance with the applicable provisions.
- Special contributions and funding from International Organisations, public or private enterprises and legal or physical persons.

- Also, to enhance and improve the training of students and doctoral candidates through organized and systematic research.
Necessity – Feasibility of the Laboratory
Research and consequently the establishment of Laboratories has been systematically developing over the last 10 years in Universities internationally, at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level. This development is particularly visible in developed and developing countries, where tourism and culture are a major source of income and employment. The fact that the scientific fields covered by research are constantly expanding can be explained both by the importance of tourism and culture for global development and by the range of fields of activity they cover.
Therefore, it is considered that the educational and socio-economic conditions in our country also highlight the need for the establishment of a new Laboratory, which will be a reference model for educational work and knowledge, through the development of research, the design of educational and research services and the support of learning processes to those involved. The importance of establishing a Research Laboratory also lies in the necessity of forming a structured framework that will support and develop systematic interdisciplinary research in our country by promoting the support of researchers, students, empowering the University and expanding its social role.
Further, and in the context of the above, the establishment of a laboratory focusing mainly on Sustainable Tourism and Culture is supported. The integration of the concept of sustainability in the development of tourism and culture is now, on a global scale, a basic requirement for achieving the long-term improvement of the conditions for the growth of these two sectors, aiming at a balanced development with the conservation of the socio-economic and natural resources of the destinations.
Indicative of the importance of Sustainability is that the United Nations declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism, recognizing the enormous potential of the tourism industry, which represents around 10% of global economic activity, contributing to growth and employment, mutual understanding and the protection of tangible and intangible resources.
For Greece in particular, the increase in the phenomena of crowded tourist destinations (over-tourism), with all that this implies in terms of declining growth, combined with the fact that tourism is one of the most important contributors to GDP and employment growth, indicates the need for further research and dissemination of the findings to the wider community of stakeholders at the economic and social level, in order to ensure Sustainability and the fair distribution of positive results.
Another indication of the importance given to culture is that 2018 was designated as the European Year of Cultural Heritage and aimed to encourage more people to discover and embrace Europe’s cultural heritage. A variety of activities, events and celebrations took place at European, national, regional and local level as part of the European Year of Cultural Heritage. These actions highlighted the positive contribution of cultural heritage to the economy, society, tourism, employment, the relationship between Europe and third countries, cultural diversity, social inclusion and intellectual dialogue.
At Harokopeio University there are no similar laboratories treating these subjects. Similarly, in other Greek universities there are so far no laboratories combining sustainable tourism and culture.
International Trend
Internationally, similar research activities are being developed, as Tourism and Culture constitute one of the most dynamic and fastest growing sectors of the global economy, with its operation being linked to the internationalization of a large number of productive sectors, as well as service sectors of the economy, which leads many Universities in many countries to create Research Laboratories, in order to understand and interpret the phenomenon and to set the basis for the application of research results for the benefit of the local economies and societies.
Sustainability and Development Perspectives
The Laboratory will take specific actions following the planning of growth and sustainability perspectives. Indicatively:
- Creation of a website (in English and Greek), related to the research interests of the Laboratory in Greece and abroad.
- Participation in an Academic Journal
- Organization of and participation in scientific conferences, workshops and related events (in Greece and abroad) on topics that fall within the research interests of the laboratory,
- Preparation of research collaborations in Innovative Themes, with the aim of submitting them to Institutions for funding
Potential Collaborations with other Laboratories
The Laboratory may develop collaborations with all other Laboratories of the Department, as well as with laboratories of other Departments of the Foundation, for the implementation of research and educational activities of common interest.

Necessity – Feasibility of the Laboratory
A contemporary trend in educational systems worldwide is to connect the disciplines of psychology and education in the context of studying the components of an effective school, a school for everyone. Over the last 30 years, a systematic effort has been made by global organisations, such as UNESCO, in order for the global scientific and educational community to reach a commonly accepted set of principles regarding the purpose of schools, the right of all children and adults to education and the characteristics of quality education. This effort has resulted in many documents and declarations (e.g. the famous Salamanca Declaration) according to which the modern school should serve the student, promote his or hers cognitive and psychosocial development and contribute to the fight against all obstacles to quality education. Particular emphasis is placed on supporting and educating children from vulnerable social groups. In addition, UNESCO highlights the need to improve access to quality education for sustainable development in all social contexts and to redefine the role of education in promoting knowledge and fostering skills, attitudes and behaviours for sustainable development.
Based on the above, and given that the formation of Laboratories has been systematically developing in the last 10 years internationally in the field of Universities, at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level, the establishment of a Laboratory of Psychopedagogy is considered necessary in the Department of Economics and Sustainable Development, which since its establishment has been systematically dealing with the contemporary trends of education and educational psychology. The fact, moreover, of the continuous expansion of the scientific fields covered by psycho-pedagogical research is explained on the one hand by the importance of Psychology in the field of Education for the holistic development of humans, but also by the variety of possible areas of application in schools, families and the wider society.
EDU.PSY.LAB differs from the other Laboratories of the Institution as it focuses on the systematic study of issues related to education, and educational psychology with a special interest in the student, the educator and the family. It also differs from similar laboratories in other Greek universities in the way it approaches a variety of educational issues through the study of the ecological framework of development and dealing with them. In addition, EDU.PSY.LAB is a pioneer in the development of research on education, educational psychology and education for sustainable development.
International Trend
Similar research activities are being developed internationally, as Education and Psychology are two dynamic scientific fields of the global academic community, whose connection is related to innovative ideas in the field of school reality and the local community. This leads many universities in many countries to establish Research Laboratories aimed to understand and interpret educational phenomena and to lay the foundations for the application of research results for the benefit of local and wider societies.
Sustainability and Development Prospects
The Laboratory, in the context of its activities in a 3-year time horizon, will seek to create a website (in Greek and potentially in English), organize scientific conferences, workshops and other scientific activities (in Greece and abroad), encourage participation in scientific events and plan to invite distinguished scientists working on the topics that fall within the research objects of the Laboratory, prepare research collaborations and proposals, elaborate teaching and research PhD projects, and organize scientific meetings, workshops and other scientific activities (in Greece and abroad).
For the implementation of the above actions, the Laboratory will use part of the existing infrastructure of the Department, while it may also acquire new technological equipment contributing to its research and educational work. The students and researchers of the Laboratory will have access to advanced equipment and specialised software in order to assist and complete their work.
The Laboratory will be located at the premises of Harokopio University, in accordance with the legal procedures. The cost of operating the Laboratory will be for the support of related courses, laboratory activities, bachelor and master theses, doctoral dissertations, service to the Department and research activities. In particular, with regard to research activities, the Laboratory will seek to be involved in National and European Research Programmes, from which it is expected to cover part of its costs.
Potential synergies with other Laboratories
EDU.PSY.LAB can provide knowledge and scientific support to the entire University, through the organisation of seminars on best educational practices. In addition, members of EDU.PSY.LAB can cooperate with members of other laboratories on topics that require a systematic approach and understanding of a variety of psycho-educational phenomena.
